Speaker Kits: INFORMATION

We can't think of a better way to spend a rainy day than starting with a pile wood, parts and wire, and ending up having dinner, listening to your favorite music - cranked up on speakers you built!

Speakerlab has been building speakers and speaker kits since 1971; from the legendary K's and 7's, through some of the first subwoofer/satellite systems, to the recent NW series. Over those many years, tens of thousands have been sold worldwide because they are not only affordable, high quality, and great sounding; they are also a blast to build!

How do you improve on legendary success like that? Well, you could round up the original engineers (and a few new ones) and ask them, "if you knew then what you know now, what speakers would you design?", and that is exactly what we did! What they had to say was that the tenets of speaker design haven't changed all that much, but the materials and equipment have gotten better. So, over the next few months Speakerlab is going to build on history by re-visiting some old designs and developing some new ones, all with an eye to keeping what has always been great about a Speakerlab speaker (great sound, great output, great value) while taking advantage of the newest materials and manufacturing.

So, anyone for a 35th anniversary 7, or maybe a .1 that plays louder and lower? How about a sub/sat system that brings some dignity back to 'computer audio'? Let us know what you think, it is your passion for projects that drives our passion!

Update, take 4!
(June 2010)

After releasing the engineering to production we have had a major delay in parts supply, so late April is now looking like July, sorry about that. We continue to enjoy the prototypes at the store, so we are sure you will enjoy the finished product!

Update, take 3!
(March 2010)

Did I say December? I meant April...

So we ran through a bunch of testing and refinement over the last three months on the Point1 and are finally satisfied that you will love the way they sound! Since we had the time, we worked on the Point25 also, so that may release sooner than expected. The parts are now in work and we hope to have all the parts by mid-April, YEH!

Now we are moving on to the design on the rest of the line, as well as trying to figure out how to make a 7 for the 21st century (horns, ribbons, wave guides???), stay tuned!

Update, take 2!
(November 2009)

Ok, we hoped to have the Point1 shipping by now, but the delay was for good reason. With all the input we received at the Speakerlab Alumni reunion, we decided we could push the performance even further, so the woofer received some tweaks, which meant we had to update the crossover, and we are now testing the result! Since our initial design illicited comments like,"great soundstage" and "very smooth response", we expect the update to really be something special. Our current goal is to have a limited number of units available by the end of the year, with a larger quantity following early in January, keep your fingers crossed!

  "Green" details:
After much testing, we have found a bamboo fill material that outperforms the standard synthetic used in other speakers. Each kit will ship with the proper quantity, and we can supply additional material if you are doing something custom.

The cabinets we are building will use environmentally friendly MDF which not only smells better, it performs better too!

  Speaker options:
The Electronic Kit (EK) consisting of the drivers, the crossover, the proper amount of fill, the terminal cup, wire assembly and instructions for the cabinet design and kit assembly (this is for folks who want to build their own box).

The Unfinished Kit (UKV or UKM) which includes all of the above, along with a cabinet in either unfinished veneer or unfinished MDF.

Finished (FV or FP) in either veneer or painted (for those who prefer we do the work).

Initially each speaker will be available as an Electronic Kit, with the Unfinished Kit and Finished speakers to follow on based on demand.

On the Point Line page we have laid out expected dates on each of the speakers, and will be adding the pricing, pictures and more details soon.

For those of you who have asked about other kits (7's, K's, etc.), we will get working on some of those as soon as we get the Point Line shipping. We have recently rebuilt quite a few sets of 7's, so we are getting a good feel for what can be done to update and improve that design. The K plans continue to be available, just give us a call and we can send them out.
